Chlorine
Do everything you can to reduce your exposure to this dangerous toxin

Typically, most people grew up with the belief chlorine is something that brightens and whitens our clothes, protects us from germs in our houses, from bacteria in the water we drink, and provides an effective means of sterilization.  For some, the smell of chlorine as a server wipes off a table top in a restaurant signals that it has been sanitized and is now safe.

Back in the early 1900’s this was probably true.  The spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever were essentially eliminated once water supplies were treated with chlorine.  But those benefits are now overshadowed by the long term, residual effects from the overuse of chlorine.  Chlorine, widely used in manufacturing, as well as our drinking supply poses a significant health risk to all Americans.

Over 30 years of research has proven without a doubt that the interaction of chlorine with organic materials is highly detrimental to both our health and our environment.
¨
Chlorine has been documented to aggravate asthma—especially in children who swim a lot in chlorinated pools
¨ Chlorine consumption doubles the risk of bladder and rectal cancers
¨
Chlorine is linked to congenital cardiac anomalies, birth    defects, reproductive disorders, and immune system breakdown
¨
Chlorine is associated with skin conditions such as    eczema, acne, psoriasis, and seborrhea

Many years ago laws were passed making chlorination of water mandatory.  Now, the chlorine industry and government agencies must continue their existing policies, because if sudden or drastic changes are made, the legal liabilities would be staggering.  This predicament could make the tobacco industry scandal seem insignificant in comparison.

Experts argue the dangers of chlorine, saying that it dissipates and breaks down over time.   This may be true in highly controlled lab conditions, but if this were true in the real world, then why is chlorine used as a water treatment solution, and why is it accumulating in our waterways?  In fact, for the water treatment industry, one of the biggest advantages of chlorine is that it doesn’t break down easily.  Water can be treated miles and miles away at a treatment facility and the chlorine will remain in the water and pipes when it arrives in homes.

The human health impact
Numerous studies show that when chlorine mixes with natural organic substances, dangerous cancer causing organochlorines, called THMs (trihalomethanes), are created.  They can be inhaled from the vapors in your shower, absorbed through the skin from the paper products we use, or ingested in the water we drink.

In laboratory studies THM’s are known to damage the thyroid gland, cause cancerous tumors, and affect the nervous system, liver and kidneys, and cause reproductive disorders.

According to the U.S. Council Of Environmental Quality, “Cancer risk among people using chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.”

Inhalation is the worst exposure
Surprisingly, the most harmful exposure to chlorine comes from skin absorption and inhaling steam while showering.    The kidneys and digestive system at least partially filter out some of the toxins when you drink chlorine treated water, but when you shower, pores are open increasing the carcinogenic properties and allowing for accelerated absorption of the toxic chemicals.

Chlorine and most chemicals vaporize very quickly, so you may be absorbing up to 50 times more chemicals in the shower, since vapors are more concentrated in  steam.    Inhalation is a much more noxious form of exposure because the chlorine gas does directly into the blood stream, while the vapors are a strong irritant to the lungs.  Many scientists feel that the increased exposure by inhalation of chlorine vapors is strongly linked to the 300% increase in Asthma in the last 10 years.  And chlorine chemically bonds with the proteins in the hair, skin, and scalp.

Chloramines
And now there is a new and even more dangerous alternative being introduced for the treatment of municipal water supplies, called chloramines.   Chloramines are a mixture of chlorine and ammonia.   The water treatment industry loves chloramines because they do not dissipate and are more stable throughout the water  delivery system.   They are said to be less reactive to organic substances, but paradoxically, scientists have found that the toxic by-products found in chloramines are 300 times more toxic than those produced by chlorine.  According to toxicologist      Michael J. Plewa, from the University of Illinois, “The disinfection by-product found in U.S. drinking water treated with chloramines is the most toxic ever found.”

The fact that cities who start using Chloramines have to send out a warning notice that their water can no longer be used in fish tanks or by people who are on kidney dialysis, should serve as a red flag.   As far as we’re concerned anytime a chemical is made “stronger and more resilient”, it can’t be good news for humans!

The environmental impact of chlorine in manufacturing:
The paper industry is one of the primary users of chlorine.  The various production and bleaching processes, used to make  paper, create toxic carcinogenic wastewater containing dioxins and organochlorines, which are dumped into our rivers and streams.  In North America alone, 100 million tons of organochlorides are pumped into our waterways each year.

Organochlorides result from the chemical reaction of Chlorine bonding with organic substances, such as leaves, vegetation, and basically, anything living.  Because these byproducts do not easily break down, they remain in the environment where they accumulate.

Dioxin, has been found by the EPA (The Environmental Protection Agency), to be 300,000 times more carcinogenic than DDT.      Because of widespread dioxin pollution, typically, Americans ingest 300 to 600 times more dioxin on a daily basis than what has been deemed “safe” by the EPA.

Although our bodies were designed to metabolize the many substances that we come in contact with every day, the body cannot process dioxins.  The human body is unable to metabolize and break down even very low levels of exposure.  Dioxins remain in the body tissues, where they accumulate with each additional exposure.  The cumulative effect of dioxin in humans has been linked to birth defects, immune system breakdown, cancer, diabetes,  neurotoxicity, and reproductive disorders.

Once in the body, Dioxin mimics estrogen, disrupting hormones, damaging major organs such as the liver, and cause breast cancer cells to multiply.   A Hartford Connecticut study found that, “women with breast cancer have 50% to 60% higher levels of organochlorines (Dioxin) in their breast tissue than those without breast cancer.”

Additionally, many common household items, such as coffee filters, paper towels, bathroom tissue, diapers, feminine hygiene products, paper milk cartons, and other paper containers have all been bleached with chlorine, and therefore contain dangerous levels of dioxin.  Cancer causing chemicals can be absorbed through the skin as they are used, and can leach into food products from bleached paper containers.

Although many recycled papers are not bleached with chlorine the second time around, oftentimes the original processing method is unknown.  Look for the following designation in the paper goods you buy:

PCF - processed chlorine free:  Recycled paper that has not been re-bleached with chlorine, and contains at least 30% post-consumer content (meaning waste that was discarded and is now being recycled).

TCF – Totally chlorine free: brand new paper made without using any chlorine compounds, and which did not use old growth forest.

Avoid bleached white paper products.  (If you notice, the recycled paper products in most health oriented stores are brown, not white).

What Can You Do?
Many people who read about the dangers of chlorine for the first time are horrified and shocked that this toxic substance is flowing right out of their faucets.   Since chlorine is used so extensively, and chlorine byproducts have basically saturated our waterways, it’s not realistic to expect to remove this toxin from all aspects of your life.   So, until changes come about, we all just have to do the best we can.  Here are some suggestions that will help both you and the environment:

· Avoid all bleached paper products

· Look for the PCF and TCF designation on products

· Buy chlorine filters for your shower heads

· Don’t drink chlorinated tap water

· Limit your exposure to heavily chlorinated swimming pools (this is especially important for kids)

· Switch to natural, bleach free cleaning products, and detergents

· And most importantly, boost your immune system so your body can fight the harmful effects of these and other toxins you come in contact with every day

Remember that more dangerous chemicals enter the body through skin absorption and inhalation, while showering and bathing, than from drinking chlorinated water.   Many people have larger “whole house” filter systems installed on the water line entering their house.   Be sure to find out what type of chlorine your local water treatment facility uses so you can get the proper filter.  Most chlorine filters will not remove chloramines.  You may have to do some research.

Our Suggestion:
The healthiest people are going to be the ones who make a conscientious effort to reduce their exposure to all toxins they encounter, whenever possible.  This includes all the chemicals, preservatives, colorings, MSG, artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated oil, and more, that can be found in prepared, pre-packaged food, and convenience foods.  If it isn’t fresh and organic, and it’s been subjected to harsh processing methods, then you probably shouldn’t eat it!

Drink purified water, and don't drink sugar and chemical filled soft drinks. They are more damaging than you can imagine. They leach nutrients from the body, and they contain phosphates and fluoride that saturates the thyroid.  And artificially sweetened drinks contain excitotoxins, which is a whole other shocking health report!*   Excitotoxins are even worse in liquid form. Don't use artificial sweeteners at all, ever, and absolutely do NOT give them to your children for any reason!   (Did you know that Splenda, the supposedly great new sugar substitute, is a chlorinated sucrose derivative, known to cause damage to the thymus gland?).

At the very least, make sure you're taking supplement products that can help to remove Chlorine by products and other toxic substances from the body.

Fulvic minerals (i.e. Vital Earth’s Fulvic Mineral Complex)   provide natural chelation therapy. They detoxify the body, the liver, and the digestive tract, by attaching to toxic buildup,   including heavy metals, and chlorination by-products, where it disarms, neutralizes, and removes them as waste products. Fulvic also works as nature’s most powerful antioxidant, neutralizing dangerous free radicals, as well as supplying hormone stimulating micronutrients.

So, the bottom line is, try to remove Chlorine and other toxins whenever possible, eat healthy, and make sure you're supplying products that help to flush the toxins out of the body.
